Seahawks exhibition season game with Grandpa

Anthony went to the second exhibition home game with Grandpa.  After a quick dinner at Il Terrazo they went to the game.
The Hawks played the Packers.  Look at the silly cheese heads below.

This is a great shot of Grandpa Henry and Anth.

Always a good sign to see us kicking an extra point.
We ended up losing 27-24 but because we scored over 21 points, all fans get free pancakes!

BREAKING NEWS: Amy CAN let a grudge go...

It’s happened before - Amy can hold a grudge... really well...   So when she had a TERRIBLE dining experience at BOKA Kitchen & Bar at Hotel 1000 in Seattle, she decided right then and there she was “done with that place.”
One fateful Friday, long LONG story short, Amy went to BOKA and had, what she believes was the most horrible dining experience ever.  She was so “livid pi$$ed” that she left without leaving a tip - something that is against her moral code.  So disturbed by the whole experience, she took it upon herself to write a letter to BOKA so someone would know how bad the experience was, and so she could explain why it was she did not leave a tip - that whole moral code thing was really haunting her.
It took a little while, but she got a letter back from BOKA - they apologized for the terrible experience, explained that this was not the norm, and basically begged her to give them one more chance.  In addition, they sent her a gift certificate.
Take a moment to think of a denomination that would be appropriate to receive.  $25?  A free entree coupon?  $50?
Now, either Amy is an exceptional letter writer or BOKA is exceedingly generous (or a little of both) because BOKA presented Amy with a gift certificate, to be used all at once and within one calendar year, for one hundred fifty dollars.
Skeptics claimed that we could not possibly use the entire gift certificate in one sitting.  We wouldn’t be interested in a fine bottle of wine, and the prices at BOKA are fairly reasonable, so how could we possibly spend it all at once?  Let us tell you...
When dining on a “free money” budget, we found the feeling similar to that which we assume is the life of a king and queen.  Ever wanted to try so many things on the menu that you could hardly decide which two to try?  How about just trying all of them?
(please note:  we did not have our camera with us during dinner, so these pictures were taken on Amy’s Palm Centro... which means they look crappy)
Before checking out the drink menu, we were presented with the specials sheet.  The chef was featuring two small plates including a fresh beet salad and grilled donut peach dish.  So in honor of our love of beets and Amy’s affection for donut peaches (and for Lynn who would have loved to try them too) we tried both.

First, the Beet Salad:  Delicate baby beets, cooked then chilled to perfection over a smattering of beet puree paired with goat cheese and orange segments.  (Amy believes there was a basil garnish, however she couldn’t be sure as Anthony had accidentally eaten the whole garnish before she had a chance...)  Delectable.
Second, the Grilled Donut Peach:  To our surprise, we had a trio of donut peaches, each pitted then grilled to the perfect temperature and texture, stuffed with baby lettuce leaves that had been dredged in dressing with a creaminess that allowed cilantro flakes to adhere to the leaves like green confetti.
As we sampled these dishes, we surveyed the drink menu.
Anthony chose one of his standby drinks - the Mojito - but this time a new flavor in his repertoire, coconut.  We found the flavor of this drink to be pleasantly sweet, while cool and refreshing - just as a mojito should be.
Amy had selected the Watermelon Sorbet Martini.  While a bit strong for some, this drink had a pleasant tang and punch to it which was made heavenly once Amy broke up her sorbet scoop and blended the drink together.  Mmm, so fresh and so tasty!  Apparently she had sampled the last watermelon sorbet scoop of the night - yessss!
On to the next dish... time for some Ahi Tuna Poke!  Not traditionally one of Amy’s favorites, but something Anthony just had to try - and why not!?
Excellent choice!  This poke was delectable.  Delicate, melt in your mouth Ahi over a bed of avocado, all brought together with the heat of a sriracha mayonnaise and served with crispy thin house made taro chips.  A perfect balance.
Now onto one of Papa Raymond’s BOKA favorites - the Muscles and Frites!
Muscles in a smoky tomato broth with a side of truffle fries.  What’s not to like?  This muscles were some of the biggest we’d ever seen... well, as far as the shellfish variety are concerned...
Now onto something Amy’s really been wanting to try, but just hasn’t had the chance.  Stuffed Crispy Zucchini Blossoms...
Now to anyone who hasn’t heard of them and/or hasn’t tried them before - give them a shot.  Not only had Amy been eager to try this dish, but she’s been on a goat cheese kick and was stoked to find that these blossoms were stuffed with that very ingredient!  The picture does not do this dish justice, and the greens that were served with the dish were not enjoyed by either of us.  That being said, this delicate sounding dish was quite rich and so full of flavor and wonderful texture.  With almost every bite she took, Amy couldn’t help but say, “Mmmm!”  So good!
Guess what time it is?  Time for another drink!
Anthony gave the Smoky Martini a try.  This was the driest drink on the list, but a martini finished with a splash of scotch sounded too crazy not to try.  Unfortunately, while the initial flavor was pleasant and smooth, the final kick left us with the skeeves.  Hey, you can’t like EVERYTHING you try, right?  That’s why there are 31 flavors of ice cream...  Thankfully we had a wonderful server that evening, Samuel, who was happy to bring us a replacement drink.
It sounds pretty girly, but Anthony just had to give it a try - to replace his martini he ordered the Mango Cosmo.  This cosmo included muddled cilantro and had a unique yet pleasant flavor.  The mojito was the winning drink between the two, but the cosmo was a worthy choice nonetheless.
Amy needed a little more time to finish her first drink and select her next one.  Not only were they out of watermelon sorbet, but she just had to try something different.  After further examination of the specialty cocktails she selected the Southwest Tea.
Amy is not a huge iced tea fan, but on a recent lunch with our friend, Sommer, she tried a Jeremiah Weed Sweet Tea, and found it to be quite enjoyable... so why not give the Southwest Tea a try?  This tea had an unmistakable bite to it, but was quite delicious.  As with Anthony’s drink choices, Amy’s first choice was still her favorite.
As we polished off the muscles and blossoms, we started to hit a wall.  We’d had a lot to eat in a short amount of time - and as fun as the evening was, we don’t normally eat that much at once.  Typically we share a salad and an entree, so this was really living it up for us.  And with some of the foods being so rich, we took a break to just enjoy our drinks for a bit.
Oops... someone had started to eat this before the photo could be taken... so here is most of it...
We decided to give the Wedge Salad a try.  While we’d already had a beet salad, and this wedge came with beets, Anthony is in love with wedge salads - something Amy has never made at home, so as with everything else we’d ordered so far... why not?  The wedge was petite, but scrumptious - just what Anthony needed to satisfy his craving.
We also ordered a side of Creamy Corn with Leeks, not knowing that the scallop entree we’d selected came served over a bed of the same side - oh well.  We ended up taking our side of corn home, but as you can't see here (because we took the photo too late) it looked pretty good in the little baking dish...
"Can we get the corn to go please?"
And lastly, our 13th item, the star of the meal - Diver Sea Scallops... oops!  We were so excited that we forgot to take a photo until after we had eaten it all!!!  It must have been good!!
This dish is served with a bacon vinaigrette, which we omitted, but as we can attest was certainly not needed.  The scallops were cooked to perfection - but browned on only one side... Gordon Ramsay would not approve.  Despite how full we were, the scallops were worth the pain.
Samuel was impressed that we took down every dish we ordered, with the exception of the side of corn, and stated that if we had elected to go for dessert, something was definitely wrong with us.
We leave you with some final thoughts:  To Samuel - thank you for a wonderful evening.  To BOKA - thanks for setting things right.  To everyone else - Amy has officially let this grudge go;  who says a person can’t change?

Falsies Volum' Express - Maybe it's Maybelline, or maybe it's just me?

Does anyone else find the new Falsies Mascara commercial a little... odd?

You've got 3 attractive women, they look kinda like spies or something... maybe Charlie's Angels?

Then, playing throughout the commercial is a theme song to a popular TV show...

Charlie's Angels?

Hell no, that $hit is from Magnum PI!

Am I the only one that thinks this is odd?

Anth's birthday weekend

Anthony's birthday weekend was super fun.  After sleeping in and not going to work (on Friday), Amy surprised Anthony with breakfast at a french bakery in Kirkland.  We enjoyed a chocolate croissant, Vanilla Neapolitan and a glass of milk.  Then we went and got a strawberry bubble tea with tapicoa balls.  (it was alright, but our next bubble tea will be at a place that specializes in the stuff, can't wait!)

We came home, relaxed and then went to Rikki Rikki for a sushi lunch.  That was followed by the viewing of The Other Guys (Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg's latest flick).  We came home, changed and then went out to Magnolia for dinner at Palisades.  After a drink each, a shared caesar salad and 2 entrees (pan seared halibut & Ahi 2 ways) with a scallop substituted instead of the crab for each of us and we were stuffed.  We had to pass on dessert, even though it was a special occasion.
This is all of the loot Anth got from Amy.  The new Madden 2011 is tough to see in the picture.  She also is taking us to a Trailblazers game in Portland this winter and that will turn into a long weekend!

These pants were early birthday gifts since Anthony needed them badly after trashing all of his pleated pants.

Saturday Lynn and Norman came over and we went to Inception (which was good, and long...2.5 hours).  Then Norman and Anthony tried watching an old Monday Night Mayhem movie but both fell asleep.  Once awake, Amy served up a gourmet meal of Mahi Mahi encrusted with potato chips, Chile Rejano, mashed potatoes and a corn and pepper salad.  It was delicious.  We than watched Date Night which was funny and finished the evening with a large slice of chocolate cake with an equally large glass of milk.  Birthdays are awesome and this was once Anthony really enjoyed!

Saturday, Lynn and Norman can over and we went to see Inception (which was good, and long... 2.5 hours... but Anth stayed AWAKE!!).  Then Norman and Anthony tried watching an old movie, Monday Night Mayhem, but both fell asleep.  Amy was cooking at the time and talking with Lynn in the kitchen, we think they saw more of the movie than the boys did.  Once the boys were done with their movie nap, Amy served up a gourmet meal of potato chip encrusted Mahi Mahi, a chile relleno, mashed potatoes with sauteed onion, and a black bean salad.  Everything was delicious.  We then watched Date Night, which was funny, and finished the evening with a large slice of chocolate cake and an equally large glass of milk - one of Anth's all time favorite snacks!  Birthdays are awesome and this was one Anthony really enjoyed!  The big 2-9!!

Mariners game for Anth's birthday

For Anthony's Benezra family birthday celebration he picked an evening Mariners game versus the Oakland AIDS.
No evening with the Benezras would be complete without Selena and Jason, shown above, waiting for their diet cokes to arrive.  Of course, also in true Benezra event form, someone has to bring up Subway vs. Jimmy Johns, and here Jason is pulling up the Jimmy John menu on his phone...

Our seats were nice, not a bad view as seen above.  Plus we had tons of room as no one was in the row behind us and we could spread out.

What!?  We are awesome.

So, this is this Ivar's salmon sandwich... Nick and Anth were protesting the fact that they changed the bread to a hamburger bun... cheapskates!

We also tried some fish and chips, as shown above with HELLA tartar sauce.  Anth and Nick wanted extra for their sandwich, so the lady at the register was kind enough to provide them with a one month supply...

Who is cooler than these two?

Libs and Tay before they had to leave early.  This picture was taken by Anth in a hella quick undercover manner.  This is the first time we've seen them since their wedding!  They are still really tan from their honeymoon in Mexico.

What's better than spotting Captain Plastic at an M's game and having him come to your section?  Getting your picture taken with him?  No.  Taking a picture of some random Asians getting THEIR picture taken with him.  Oh hell yes...  Just a typical day at The Safe...

Since it was a birthday celebration, dessert was in order.  Amy and Nick had never tried Dippin Dots before, so Amy and Nick got cookies and cream flavor while Anth gave Bubble Gum a try.

Samara couldn't make it because she had a test to take that night, so Jeremy brought his friend Taylor, seen here.

Mom, of course, got cold at the game (as seen here wearing both her own and Larry's coat), and Dad read the newspaper... yep.

Holy crap!  We won!!  2-0.  Felix pitched awesome, 13 K's and as Dave Simms says, "Case closed by the DA (David Ardsma)."

Seafair 2010

Well the weather was grey and it threatened to rain, but overall it turned out to be a great day.  For the last few years, Seafair Sunday has treated us well weatherwise, but not so much this year.  Much more chill than last year as many people were afraid of the traffic and poor weather.  But Jason and Anthony still swam in the lake.....

Amy's favorite part is still the blue angels, so even though they had to do a "flat" show due to weather, she was still excited.  One of the planes/jets that flew before the blue angels started flew directly over us at the house and we felt the air smack us and the house shake... it was a little like being in a transformer flick, and Amy LOVED it!!

Though we didn't get any photos as proof, Jon and Maureen Stewart came by and hung out and swam with us too.  There was a dramatic entrance into the lake thanks to Amy, Jon and Maureen... let's just say the water was cold... but Maureen and I used our floatie beds and enjoyed some lake time, followed up by a dip in the pool and then the hot tub.

Hey - Seafair weather... try to be nicer next year, ok?

Anth high school reunion weekend

The Newport High School reunion weekend started at Lucky Strike with free bowling and ended at Ray's boathouse for "heavy apps" and drinks.  It was very weird but overall pretty fun.
The front of the school has since changed quite a bit, but this is what it looked like back in the day.

Sara Mac, Jen Dave, Paul and Karly

Anth and Ames after 4 games of bowling at the lucky strike event the night before the reunion

Here's a picture of us at Ray's just before leaving...

Dave and Sara Mac - 2 people Anthony has known for 20 years.

Wil and Laura were there too - thank goodness because Amy needed someone to chit chat with during the long "reunion" moments...

Friedman's in from California

David and Gloria Friedman (Anthony's great uncle and aunt) came to Seattle for the first time in many years to visit the family.  Saturday night July 31st we all went to Grandma and Grandpa's house.  Obviously David and Gloria and Grandma and Grandpa were there and so was Allan and his girlfriend PJ and Rob.  It was fun seeing everyone together and was nice to meet PJ.  The next day we went over to Mom and Dad's house for a bagel and lox lunch/brunch.  Jason and Selena came to that (they had a wedding the night before) and unfortunately Jeremy and Samara were in Montana for a wedding for the whole weekend.

After everyone left Jason and Anthony went swimming in the lake and then Amy joined them in the pool and jacuzzi.  The lake was super, crazy cold!

Tay & Libb - The Wedding - Part II

Between the wedding ceremony and reception the guests had a little downtime.  There was a spread of appetizers, which we all enjoyed.  Then a group of us decided to take a little break off our feet for a bit in the house.  We just happened to sit right next to the liquor cabinet... shots anyone?

Amy, Selena and Samara decided to tackle a shot of vodka... too bad it was hot vodka... oh well, what's done is done!

Did we mention the food?  Jere just LOVED the meatballs (and he wasn't the only one)... of course Anthony and Amy didn't partake...

Photo op!  Jason and Selena looking so cute!

And of course, no evening is complete without some furniture surfing... thanks Nicky D!!

Later, after dinner was served, toasts were made and the dance floor started bumping, a few of us thought the evening called for a little boat ride.  So Anthony, Amy, Nick, Jeremy, and Samara ventured out onto the lake.  This photo was taken before Jeremy started driving like a wild man and almost made us all pee our pants...  you can tell by how happy Nick and Amy still look...

When we finally got on dry land again, Amy was so excited that it overwhelmed her and she went a little crazy... as evidenced here by the petunia eating experiment... sure hope they aren't poisonous...

Arrr... not so tasty...

Of course Jere had to give the flowers a try too...

We all made our way to the dance floor.  Anth and Amy thought it was a good time to pay tribute to Corey Hart and wear our sunglasses at night...

Thanks to Mix Master Larry for getting in trouble with the DJ and making us all laugh...

Random pose with Taylor, Jason and Darrin...  Looks like we're at a club, minus the tux on Tay...

WARNING:  Bromance, straight ahead!

Nick, Amy and Anth photo op...

Oh, make a funny face...?  Ok, Amy can do that...

And of course, no event at the Benezra house is complete until Jeremy jumps into the pool from the second floor balcony...  Luckily, he made it down safely again this time...

So a strange part of the evening started just after those vodka shots.  Amy took a seat and this random dude came out of nowhere and sat next to her.  We're all sitting together with the family and this stranger just comes up and says, "So, tell me how it is I know you."  And Amy thinks, "Hmm... what kind of pick up line is this...?"  and says, "I'm gonna go with... you don't"  So this mystery guy spends a short time trying to convince Amy that he knows her from somewhere, but she's not buying it.  He finally goes on his way.  Later, she sees him walking around at dinner and it dawns on her that he does look familiar somehow... but is that just cuz he was sitting next to her moments ago?  So she asked Nick who the guy was and his name sounded vaguely familiar... so she went and talked to him later in the night... and as it turns out they attended UW together and were in the same FIG (freshman interest group) their first quarter of college.  His name is Dan and they had Chemistry, English 101 and Math 120 together.  It seems that even after 10 years, if you spent all day with someone for 3 months you'd remember them eventually...  Thanks, Dan, for helping to solve our Mystery of the Night...
