Hawaiian Adventure - Part I

July 9th, 2013

On July 7th, Xander flew with Mama and Dada, Uncle Jason and Auntie Selena, Gigi and Pappu and Uncle Jeremy and Auntie Samara to Hawaii - we all went together for Uncle Jeremy and Auntie Samara's wedding.

There were different activities each day.  The first night was a welcome reception at Jeremy and Samara's.  We mingled with friends and family and tried to beat the heat.  The next day we spent some time at the beach and were almost killed by the beast that is the ocean.  We'd decided to just walk to the beach, check it out, then head back to the pool at the condo where it was safer.  We decided to take a little dip in the ocean, but it turned out to be a longer dip.  Xander wasn't wearing his floaties, so it was a really bad idea on Mama and Dada's part, and we won't do it again.  Mama asked Dada if he wanted her to take her sunglasses since she was going to go put hers somewhere safe with friends on the beach.  The waves were a little choppy and she didn't trust herself to keep them on her face.  Dada said he'd keep his on, Mama got out and came back into the ocean, shade free.  After Dada got a little tired from holding Xander and handed him off to Mama, he went to swim with some friends.  Next thing we knew, a wave was coming in.  Before we all even had time to think the wave overtook all of us.  Mama held on to Xander for dear life and had the scariest experience she's had since becoming a parent.  It felt like we were under water forever, and all Mama could think was that underwater Xander couldn't breathe and didn't know how to hold his breath, so she flipped over on to her back and let the ocean carry her into shore (not so gently) so that Xander wouldn't get hit with the ocean floor, and could get his face into the air and out of the water as soon as possible.  As soon as Mama felt like she was on land she jumped up with all her might and ran to shore - more waves were coming in and she knew she couldn't stop to catch her breath until the land under her was dry.  Meanwhile, Dada wiped out just as badly except he injured himself a little harder and lost his sunglasses in the process.  Needless to say we learned a lot of lessons that morning and headed to the hotel pool for some safe swimming experiences.  After swimming and lunch, a nap was much needed and deserved.

Another thing that was new for us on this trip was the bed situation.  We'd rented a condo that was large enough to have two bedrooms.  We gave Xander the smaller darker one.  We set up his pack 'n play and that's when he immediately discovered he could get out of that tiny crib.  So, we had to start getting him used to sleeping (and falling asleep) in a bed.  It went pretty well, surprisingly, and on July 9th we were able to document how cute a 2 year old can be sleeping on a full sized bed.
